BOSS 302 Crate Engines Coming In 2007
It's back in crate form, the 5.0-liter 302 cubic inch V-8 which made it's debut in 1969 is making a comeback. Ford is reviving the lengendary engine for the aftermarket with a new line of BOSS 302 crate engines that will go on sale in the first part of 2007. The suggested retail price for the BOSS 302 block is affordable at $1,759, while complete BOSS engines range from $4,650 to $10K for the 500 horsepower BOSS 331 cubic inch engines. All BOSS engines come with a 12 month/12K mile limited warranty.
The unvieling of these crate engines is being made at the SEMA show in Las Vegas this week and Ford has given the engine to four car builders so they can place the new BOSS 302 in their 2006 show vehicles. Read below for all the information and specs.
Press Release:
Ford today announced at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show that it is reviving the legendary 5.0-liter 302 cubic inch V-8 engine for the aftermarket with a new line of BOSS 302 crate engines, which will go on sale in early 2007.
Making its debut in 1969, the original BOSS 302 powered a limited production Mustang model sold for two years, which was known as the BOSS 302. The car got its name from the legendary engine that powered the Mustang to a Sports Car Club of American Trans-Am series win in 1970.
“The original BOSS 302 was a race winning engine. Sharing the DNA from the original BOSS 302, the new BOSS 302 begins with a block designed with racing in mind from the beginning,” said Jamie Allison, manager, Ford Racing Performance Group. “Whether racing in a sealed engine class, building an all-out drag racing engine or looking for a street performer, the BOSS 302 block and engine family meets the needs of all Ford 302 enthusiasts at a price that is comparable to a performance-prepped stock 302.”
The new Ford Racing Performance Parts BOSS 302 line was conceived because there was an unmet need for engines built from a block stronger than original regular production 302 blocks but more affordable than full race-prepped blocks. The new BOSS 302 engine block features greater strength than most race blocks and offers a street-capable cooling system design, something that race specific blocks tend to sacrifice.
Despite its strength and capability, the new BOSS 302 line is surprisingly affordable because of its high volume production. And since it was designed within Ford Motor Company, the engine also benefits from the improved quality and durability that comes with a production type engine.
“The original BOSS 302 delivered less than 300 hp. Today, enthusiasts are making 500 hp street cars and they need a robust block. Race-specific blocks offer the strength required but cool poorly for street use and are very expensive for the average enthusiast,” says Allison.
Built from the all new BOSS 302 block, the BOSS crate engines feature performance and packaging that accommodate displacements from 302 to 363 cubic inches. Entry level engines feature the Ford Racing GT-40X Xtra Performance Turbo Swirl aluminum heads to retain stock exhaust locations and are rated at 340 and 345 hp. Higher performance versions include Ford Racing's “Z”-head equipped 302 and 347 cubic inch engines rated between 360 and 450 hp, depending on configuration. The BOSS engine series is capped by a 500 hp 331 cubic inch engine that showcases the capability of the new block by breathing through all new ported Z-heads.
Features that separate the new BOSS 302 from its competition include:
- 4-bolt mains for lower-end stability at high power outputs
- High-tin 41,000 PSI tensile strength iron alloy for ultimate strength
- Nodular iron main caps for additional strength
- Screw-in freeze plugs for additional more strength and stability
- Front cross-over lifter oiling for high RPM valvetrain capability
- Siamese bores with specifically engineered drillings between cylinders for maximum wall stability and gasket sealing with street capable cooling performance
The suggested retail price for the BOSS 302 block is and affordable $1,759, with BOSS engines ranging from $4,650 to $10,000 for the 500 hp BOSS 331 cubic inch engines. The engines come with a 12 month/12,000 mile limited warranty.
Like the original Boss 302 that was engineered for Trans Am racing, the new BOSS 302 features trickle down performance from racing in the American Speed Association (ASA) Late Model circle track series. A sealed circle track version of a 347 cubic inch BOSS engine will be available both for ASA and NASCAR circle track racers in time for the 2007 season.
Debuting in four SEMA display vehicles, four premier car builders placed the new BOSS 302 in their 2006 show vehicles. All the builders chose to use a 302 cubic inch engine, staying true to the original namesake.
Featured builders are:
- Dan Web – Award-winning hot rod creator is featuring a 390 hp BOSS engine in his 1933 Ford 3-window coupe.
- Galpin Ford – Known for their “Galpinized” custom creations, they built a “retro-mod” 2007 Mustang featuring a 360 hp BOSS engine.
- Chip Foose – Created the new “Powered by Ford BOSS 302” from a 1970 Mustang for the show Overhaulin'; public reveal at SEMA.
- Hotrods and Horsepower – Created the SEMA Deuce, a commemorative vehicle for the 2006 SEMA show featuring a 360 hp BOSS engine.

windsor style heads????? boo hoo!!!! where is the boss relation other than the 4 bolt main block. the real boss then and now is the boss 351! the streets were pretty mean back in the muscle era.if you drove a boss 302 back then you were probably pretty low on the food chain. any z28 or 340 powered car would make your night miserable. if you drove a boss 429 you probably felt safe and smug until you stopped at that light. that big ugly road runner with the flat black hood and scoop with 440 something on it suddenly made you sweat. you decide to show him whose boss. green . you sidestep the clutch and floor that big shotgun, blue cresent hemi only to watch those sqare tail lights moving away. your first thought is how those guys at mopar are so generous with their wheelwells. those boots are big. so was the one you just got in the ass! youre a cat motoring along in your boss 351 when some bowtie hero in his new generation 70 and one half z28 starts stalking you. you stop at that same light which has been so cruel to you.you look over and its the same dude that dusted you off in his 302 z. now hes got a new version and so do you.payback time, you hope. green, you ease the clutch and stomp. he pulls on you at first, then those big canted valves do their thing. a few pulls of the flawless shifter and that chevy gets small through that flatback window. now to find that mopar!

I have been a ford man for 40 years I'am glad to see the boss engine comming back i like the windsor but i also like the 302 boss. I am glad to see ford building crate engines. Thanks
By Gerry #7, Posted: 12/11/2006
I don't see how you can call it a boss without using Clevland style heads. Thats was what made it a BOSS.
By Gerry #8, Posted: 12/11/2006
If ford really wanted to do something spectacular they should reproduce the 427 SOHC. Like Chrysler did with the 426 HEMI.

all I want to know is, does the new 5.0 boss fit into my 06v6. and what do I have to do to get it in there? anyone reply if you have suggestions.. thanks

Fact is; the 1969 & 1970 BOSS 302 Mustangs were named after their unique BOSS 302 Cylinder Heads (Cleveland Style).
Unfortunately, the new (so called) boss has Windsor style cylinder heads. Not near worthy of being confused with a BOSS. Just another Windsor...!
Get real folks; the fender should say WINDSOR 302. Have the decency not to insult our culture and the real BOSS 302's amazing history
By bill budd (boss worshiper) #11, Posted: 1/5/2007
???? The boss 302 and boss 429 mustangs were nicknamed "boss" by larry shinoda , who affectionately called his boss, bunkie knudsen "boss" after trying to come up with a marketing name for the cars!!! This had nothing to do with the cleveland heads, as trans am rules dictated a 302 cid displacement, so destroking a 351 cleveland block was not an option, so ford engineers solved this dilemma by mating a 302 windsor block with high flow cleveland heads, a "clevor" if you will, that had high rpm capability to make the most of the high cfm offered by the heads, which was condusive of the large 4v ports and canted cumbustion chambers!!!
By bill budd (boss worshiper) #12, Posted: 1/5/2007
Oh, by the way if you were a true boss fan who had any inkling of mechanical imagination, why not order the boss short block from ford and top off the block with edelbrocks aluminum cleveland style heads, or the superior offering from chi in australia with their 3v aluminum cleveland style heads that are light years ahead of the 40 year old cast iron slugs that would offer 45 to 50 horse less in ported and polished form than the aforementioned heads out of the box!!!!
By Mike Lehmann #13, Posted: 1/6/2007
No Cleveland heads no boss. How corporate idiots could do so well with the block and screw up in the end.
By True BOSS Lover (& owner) #14, Posted: 1/6/2007
My point about insulting the culture was made again; through refering to the BOSS 302 cylinder head as "old cast iron slugs". This is the attitude that leads to the misrepresentation of what a BOSS truely is. In essence a BOSS 302, in most peoples minds, is the SCCA history in 1969 and mostly 1970. The performance enhancement made in 1970 was to go to smaller 2.19" intake valves (and yes they are in the cylinder head). This allowed the BOSS to be more responsive and come out of the turns quicker. No modern car can bring that history back even with the wrong cylinder head!
Once again; the fender should say WINDSOR 302 unless it has BOSS heads. Have the decency not to insult our culture and the real BOSS 302’s amazing history.

I am a huge fan of the classics having owned many, and traded in my 97 Cobra for a 2005-GT. I am very happy to hear they are making those blocks, the 5.0s were too weak for serious output. The best part of the Boss302 was the heads though, and in that department they have been surpassed my the aftermarket. A set of AFR185/205s are a better choice for a high reving motor these days, you can raise compression due to the aluminum and the weight savings are obvious. Now if they bring back the canted valve (Cleveland) design we're talking!
...and no...these will not be street legal to drop into your SN197 :-)

I just want one of these 4 bolt mains to drop in my brother's 87 ranger. Now that's going to be hilarious when built. And this makes it all the easier to get a 4bolt main now :D

I again with bring back the 427 SOHC. Ford should start competing with Dodge, otherwise they will be left behind.

Had a boss 351 climb up the back of my Lincoln at 6am on the Santa Ana Freeway in Ca back years ago. Rainy morning on the way to my exec job - traffic stopped - and the young fella behind me could'nt get the rubber to stick. He laid that 351 engine all over the street. I felt so sorry for him. Backed up traffic - I'm standing there in the rain kneeling over him trying to stop the bleeding - rude people going by giving me the finger cause they got detained. Building a deuce coupe - will consider this engine.

i love how people leaving comments are argueing of cylinder heads.
if they dont like what ford has done then buy the engine and change the heads urself then you can take the name on the side (boss 302)
and change it to (stuck up 302)
becuase in the end FORD knows what they have done
and they know what is best for cars since they really are CAR PEOPLE
and i love how buddi named ( True BOSS Lover (& owner))
rants on bout not having the right cylinder heads and that we insulted the legend of the boss
well we all kno he disgraced the BOSS when he wanted to change it to WINDSOR
HAHA I LOVE THE NEW BOSS 302
i am goin to park one in the garage next
2 my 87 gt cobra
By Leif #21, Posted: 4/12/2007
Damn, when I saw that they were bringing back the Boss, I thought I would be able to save some time and effort by using one of these in my 73 Mach One. But with the Windsor heads (and smaller displacement), I will probably use the old 4-bolt 351CJ bolt sitting on the floor in my garage and build it (at least) to 351 Boss specifications... If only they would bring back that engine... Aside from the venerable 427 SOHC, in my opionion it's one of the best engines ever built (and a hell of a lot cheaper than a SOHC to reproduce)...

Having owned (in the early 1970's) a 1970 BOSS 302 with a CROSS-BOSS, 2-in-line 4 barrel equipped with 5.4" Trans-Am rods, piston and roller rocker conversion I can say that the Cleveland heads were in fact a derivative of the BOSS head. The BOSS being introduced prior to the Cleveland and also having a 'pent-roof' combustion chamber unique to the BOSS and requireing special pistons that the 'NEW' BOSS 302 is NOT a BOSS-302. Period.
Inline valves does not equal a BOSS.

Any update on a REAL Boss being available or do we still have to build our own?
By Dennis #25, Posted: 7/20/2007
Having owned a boss 302 in the 70's, the true boss would ping from poor gas quality and high compression. You had to put Exhaust restrictors in on to gain low end. For the street the new heads will work better. I remember Launching off the line at 6000 and hoping it didn't bog out or go up in smoke. Lets remember the old boss, and it's place in racing. The newer heads should be user freindly for the street and strip. And Who said we just can't buy the block and add the old heads. best of both worlds for me.

Mr. Bill Budd and others, the Boss 302 DID NOT have Cleveland heads. The Boss 302 was manufactured BEFORE the 351C. If anything, the 351C has "Boss 302" heads.
As you said, the Boss 302 was designed for Trans Am racing (as was the Chevy 302). Tunnel port heads were the original design from Ford for Trans Am, but they were not as successful as expected, so the Boss 302 design was tried next. (Tunnel port 302 heads were standard wedge style with large round ports and sheet metal tubes or "tunnels" for the push rods - never available in production cars).
The Boss 302 heads were carried over to the 351C, particularly the 4V 351Cs (by that I mean valve and port sizes). Water passages were modified for the Cleveland block as well as the valve train design. The Boss 302 had a mechanical lifer cam with an adjustable valve train. The standard 351C 4V had a hydraulic lifter cam with a non-adjustable valve train.
In general, a 302 with Windsor style heads is a 302 "Windsor", not a Boss 302. The standard 302 (5.0 liter) was available until the mid '90s in Mustang GTs. A good engine, but NOT a Boss 302.

Well I'm super excited that now we can run a production block w/ some power. Its about time that Ford stepped up their crate engines, besides a 5.0 modular stroker that is overpriced. Ford now just needs to make a 427 cammer or ohv. Please ford build a 429 Boss so that we can truly know that we are boss. I see that ford is on the right step, but we need a lighting and something to compete w/ the super vettes. Oh yeah 5.0 Cobra there were no Cobras after 81 until SVT made one in 93, excluding the canadian models. So you dont have a 87 GT Cobra. thanks James

Who cares what cylinder heads it has. The BOSS 302 heritage is the name on the side. if I blow the competition away, then i've honored the name. Besides, people are always modifying the stock vehicles in todays world.
