80 Miles Per Gallon, 400 horsepower Fox Body Mustang

If you think 80 miles per gallon and 400 horsepower don't go together you better think again because Doug Pelmear, a 48-year-old electronics engineer and master mechanic from Napoleon, Ohio has done just that with his 1987 Ford Mustang

Mr. Pelmear created his Mustang and more specifically the technologically advanced engine to compete in the $10 million Progressive Automotive X Prize: a "race" to find an affordable, marketable automobile that gets at least 100 miles per gallon.  The Progressive Automotive X Prize is sponsored by the X Prize Foundation.

NAPOLEON, Ohio - Doug... If you think 80 miles per gallon and 400 horsepower don't go together you better think again because Doug Pelmear, a 48-year-old electronics engineer and master mechanic from Napoleon, Ohio has done just that with his 1987 Ford Mustang. Read more about Doug's Mustang after the jump...   Article: NAPOLEON, Ohio - Doug Pelmear has lots of secrets beneath the hood of his black 1987 Ford Mustang on which the only outward hint of individuality is a series of stickers. But looks can be deceiving. Mr. Pelmear's 21-year-old pony car has enough technological innovation to quadruple the classic Mustang's original gas mileage while almost doubling its available horsepower. That's 80 miles per gallon and 400 horsepower, folks. And the 48-year-old electronics engineer and master mechanic is not done yet. The third-generation automotive tinkerer hopes that next year his Mustang - more specifically its engine - will help him win the $10 million Progressive Automotive X Prize: a "race" to find an affordable, marketable automobile that gets at least 100 miles per gallon, or its equivalent. "I'm an optimist, and I think people need to know there is hope out there," Mr. Pelmear said. "That's why I decided to enter the X Prize race. I could have sold this [technology] off, but then people might not have seen it. "It's not about the money. Our country really needs this." The Progressive Automotive X Prize is sponsored by the X Prize Foundation to focus attention on and improve technology for real-world fuel economy. Private teams compete in two categories, mainstream and concept, and compete against one another in a staged race that will judge performance, fuel economy, and marketability. There are no official entrants yet, but scores of teams have signed letters of intent to participate in the races, scheduled for 2009. What radical technology did Mr. Pelmear introduce? His patents are not fully in place, but he said it mostly is a matter of electronics and precision. "We redesigned a lot of different things on the [engine] block," the engineer said. "It's still a rod-and-piston engine; it just has a lot more electronics on it." Mr. Pelmear said that traditional gas engines operate "at a very low efficiency, like 8 to 10 percent, and our engine is like at 38 percent efficiency." He said he could greatly increase even that number if his car used traditional gasoline instead of a mix of gas and 85 percent ethanol, which burns hotter but releases fewer hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. His engine also would be more efficient if he had sacrificed some of its 400 horsepower or 500 foot-pounds of torque, but Mr. Pelmear said his design is intended for "real-world" uses, not the laboratory. "I'm not the highest-miles-per-gallon vehicle entered in the X Prize, but I think I'm the more consumer friendly, more down to earth, more conventional," he said. Mr. Pelmear's Mustang is entered in the X Prize's "mainstream" competition against other modified pro- duction cars. According to the X Prize foundation, he will compete against several dozen other vehicles from around the world. Source: ToledoBlade.com Read More

1989 Mustang GT Approaches 700,000 Miles on Original Engine

A woman in North Carolina has piled up close to 700K miles on her 1989 Mustang GT with the original engine still entact.  The secret to keeping the engine running smooth according to her son is regular oil changes and proper maintnence.  When executives at Ford got word of the Mustang approaching 700K miles on the original engine they rewarded her with two tickets to this weekends NASCAR race at Bristol Speedway.

My 1992 5.0 Convertible Mustang Needs A New Top

Well as you can probably tell by the photo and title of this entry my recently purchased 1992 Mustang Convertible has started to leak.  I think the big giveaway is the Halloween candy bowl acting as a drip bucket in my front passenger seat but thats the only thing I could find in a driving rainstorm on short notice the other night.  Yes I could have pulled the car into the garage but taking out the Cobra after I just washed it was not an option so she sat in the driveway leaking into the candy bowl.

Now when I purchased the car it did not leak but I knew the top had to be replaced as it's pretty worn along with it being the original top. So... Now when I purchased the car it did not leak but I knew the top had to be replaced as it's pretty worn along with it being the original top. So from what I have been reading on different forums convertible top installation is best done by the pros and not by the weekend warrior with basic handtools.  This all happend before the holidays so getting it somewhere to be replaced was pretty much out of the question and then stomaching the cost is another issue.  I did make a call to one well respected shop in my area and I was given a quote in the range of $800-$1K for replacing the top and back window depending on what extra parts that were needed.  Never having to replace a convertible top I am unsure what a fair price is so I guess I am looking for some answers, if anybody has had their top replaced or knows what the typical price is post them up in the comments and let me know.  Thanks in advance.   Read More

New 1992 Fox-Body Convertible In The Family

I have been wanting to buy a fox-body Mustang for some time to tinker around with and after quite a long search with the wifes approval, yes gotta have that, we bought this 1992 Teal/Calypso Green 5.0 LX Convertible for $5K.  It's got a white top with white leather interior and as hard as it is to say this, yes I bought an automatic.  The exterior of the car is in excellent condition and still retains its original paint.  On the inside everything is in good working condition with no rips or tears in the door panels.  The white leather is serviceable but does need to be replaced in the future.  Also needing to be replaced is the convertible... This will be my fourth fox-body Mustang I have owned since my 1990 GT, 1991 Coupe and 1990 GT Conv.  I plan on writing about everything I fix, restore or repair on this blog so keep your eyes peeled for fox-body posts.  Below I will give you a rough outline on what I have in mind for the car. Needs: New Leather Seat Covers, Convertible Top & Glass, Maybe Carpet Will Be Adding In Future: Aftermarket Radio & Speakers, Full Exhaust, Replace steering wheel Wishlist: Cobra Upper/Lower, Supercharger (5 PSI), Heads, 17" Chrome ponys I am not trying to go overboard on this car as I would like to keep it in nice original condition.  More photos to follow. Ebay: 5.0 Convertible Morphed Into SL Mercedes Benz

I guess this is one way of upgrading from a 91 5.0L convertible to a SL Mercedes Benz droptop.  One Mustang owner decided to make his own Benz the hard way by custom making all the exterior body panels in fiberglass.  Even the convertible top has the Benz look.  Some people just amaze me with the things they do. Check out the auction here.

Ebay: 1993 LX Coupe with 2003 Cobra Motor, Interior and Suspension

This auction for a 1993 LX coupe with a 2003 Cobra Motor, Interior and Suspension has to be one of my better Ebay finds as of late.  This is one of those cars you are always sitting around with your buddies saying if I had money I would do this but how.  Well fortunately somebody has already gone through the trials and tribulations of how to get this combination working and working they have to the tune of 445 horsepower and 432 ft-lbs of torque.  Is this the ultimate street sleeper or what?

The car includes an 18K mile 2003 Cobra motor stuffed under the hood with a 2.8 blower pulley added for additional horses, complete Cobra interior minus the steering wheel and airbag, flowmaster and bassani exhaust, Maximum Motor Sports K-member and coil over kit with a complete Cobra IRS suspension out back. The price at around $25K seems reasonable given all the parts and time that has been put into making this car a reality.  Do you think we could get say a Unique Performance to manufacture these babies and dubb them 'Fox-Rods'. For many people like myself who grew up with fox-body Mustangs this is definately a dream car that all of us wish we could have in our garage one day.  Lets just hope there are more of these floating around when I have the extra cash to blow. I have added more photos after the jump along with a link to the auction. Check out the auction here. Read More
