Jack Roush Inducted Into IMHOF

April 27th, 2006 by CobraMatt

Jack Roush, owner and founder of Roush Enterprises was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame earlier today at a ceremony in Talladega, Alabama.

Roush will be part of the “Class of 2006” which also includes seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion Dale Earnhardt, race promoter H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, Janet Guthrie who was the first female driver in Daytona 500 and Indy 500 history, and stock car racing legend Harry Gant. The induction ceremony will be televised on SPEED Channel with a one-hour special airing May 1 at 10:00 p.m. eastern.

Roush is honored for his many contributions to so many different forms of motorsports. His career in the sport initially began in 1966 in drag racing, stemming from a job he had with Ford Motor Company. Eventually, in 1970 he partnered with Wayne Gapp and over the next five years, the duo attracted national attention by winning events and one championship each in NHRA, IHRA and AHRA with their Pro Stock racer.

In 1976, Roush ended his partnership with Gapp and formed Jack Roush Performance Engineering. Roush’s success at the track and his reputation as a performance engineer helped deliver project after project to his doorstep. He stopped operating the drag racing team, but kept doing race business for other teams, primarily engine builds.

In 1982 Roush formed a partnership with Zakspeed Racing to run GTX and GTP cars for Ford in the United States. Zakspeed had much success racing in Europe and wanted to partner with Roush for the US races. Some of their drivers included Kevin Cogan, Bobby Rahal and European superstar Klaus Ludwig.

In 1984, Roush returned to competition in the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) road racing series and a legend was born. In the first year, he won the manufacturer’s title for Lincoln-Mercury. Since then, ROUSH Racing has claimed 24 national championships and titles in the two series, including 12 manufacturer’s championships. Some of the drivers who helped Roush achieve his 119 road racing victories are Tommy Kendall, Wally Dallenbach, Jr., Scott Pruett, Willy T. Ribbs and former Craftsman Truck team general manager, Max Jones.

Roush has also earned 10 consecutive 24 Hours of Daytona sedan class championships. Some of the drivers who competed for Roush are Kendall, Dallenbach, Pruett, Mark Martin, Bill Elliott, Ricky Rudd, Kyle Petty, Ken Schrader, Robby Gordon, Pete Halsmer, Lyn St. James, as well as actor Paul Newman and Olympian Bruce Jenner.

In 1988, Roush moved south and expanded his racing business to include a NASCAR Winston Cup team with driver Mark Martin. During the team’s inaugural season, Martin won one pole and earned 10 top-10 finishes. In October 1989, Roush and Martin claimed their first NASCAR Winston Cup victory at North Carolina Motor Speedway.

Today, ROUSH Racing, arguably the most visible of his companies, has claimed championships in the elite NASCAR Nextel Cup (formerly Winston Cup) level, as well as the Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series, making ROUSH Racing one of the few organizations to have captured titles on all three of NASCAR’s top divisions. With more than 300 wins to their credit, the organization runs five full-time NASCAR Nextel Cup teams with drivers Mark Martin, Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards. Additionally, full and part-time teams participate in Busch Series and Craftsman Truck races.

“To me, being inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame is an honor that I never even would have dreamed of happening all those years ago,” said Roush. “It is something that never could have been done though without all the support, dedication, and incredibly hard work performed by the team members, engineers, and everyone involved with all my racing endeavors over the years. This honor really should be shared by all those people also.”

Roush’s numerous educational and philanthropic activities include establishment of the Jack Roush Motorsports Scholarship fund at Clemson University, which is dedicated to supporting graduate and undergraduate students in their pursuit of motorsports-related degrees. Roush is also a member of the governing board of The Great Race, an annual vintage car road rally event.

Jack Roush was born in 1942 in and grew up in Manchester, Ohio. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Physics from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, and a Master’s Degree in Scientific Mathematics from Eastern Michigan University.

ROUSH Enterprises is comprised of several divisions and employs nearly 2,000 people in more than 50 locations throughout North America, Mexico, Germany and the United Kingdom. Corporate headquarters are based in Livonia, Mich.

ROUSH Industries is a Tier One supplier of fully integrated engineering and development support services. ROUSH Performance effectively combines the engineering expertise of ROUSH Industries with the motorsports experience of ROUSH Racing to produce complete performance vehicles, modular engines and high-performance parts. ROUSH Manufacturing provides prototype and production parts, tooling and paint services.

2006 Roush Stage 3 Mustang Unvieled

April 27th, 2006 by CobraMatt

The 2006 ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang is simply “the best Mustang we have ever built” according to Jack Roush. The Stage 3 ROUSH Mustang packs 415 ponies and 385 lb-ft of torque under the hood, thanks to the addition of the ROUSHcharger system.

The Stage 3, 4.6L, 3-valve V8 powertrain system includes the intercooled ROUSHchargerTM system with custom ROUSH-calibrated ECM and several other performance modifications. This upgrade is a vast improvement over the factory stock engine which is rated at 300 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.

But this car is more than just being quick on the throttle as the more than 1G rating on the skidpad attests. The suspension upgrades include specially-engineered and tuned front struts, rear shocks, front and rear springs, front and rear sway bars and jounce bumpers. The front brakes are also upgraded with 14-inch front two-piece rotors and four-piston calipers. Each component was specifically engineered so that ride comfort was not compromised at the expense of the tremendous gains in performance.

Exterior styling is enhanced through the addition of a seven-piece body kit constructed from OEM-type materials which sees a front fascia, front chin spoiler, hood scoop, rocker panels, rear fascia valance and rear wing installed by ROUSH factory technicians.

Other amenities include lower valence fog lamps, custom 18-inch forged rims with high-performance tires, sport leather seat covers, embroidered floor mats, billet aluminum pedals including a new dead pedal, and the Stage 3 electro-luminescent white face gauge cluster. The car also has ROUSH badging throughout and a serialized engine bay plaque indicating the car was hand-built in the Livonia, Mich., facility.

“This new ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang will literally turn heads twice,” claimed Joe Thompson, general manager of ROUSH Performance Products. “The first time is when they see how much better this car looks, and the second comes as you put your foot in it, kick in the ROUSHchargerTM, and blow by just about anything on the road.”

Optional components to further customize the car include racing stripes, interior dash trim kits, locking lug nuts, trunk tool kit, short throw shifter, billet aluminum shift knob, and more.

The ROUSH Stage 3 Mustang is available in both coupe and convertible versions, and more information can be found at Ford dealers nationwide or online at www.RoushPerformance.com. The Stage 1 and Stage 2 versions of the ROUSH Mustang are also available for those not wanting the full performance package that comes on the Stage 3 version. As with all ROUSH cars, the industry-leading 3 year/36,000 mile warranty remains intact and covers all components.

Ebay: 2001 Mustang Will Take You Into The 11’s

April 25th, 2006 by CobraMatt

Another glorious find on Ebay has led me to a 2001 Ford Mustang Convertible that will take you straight into the eleven second range. The Mustang has been professionally built by NMRA Real Street Champion, Tim Matherley of MV Performance in Statham Georgia. The car was purchased new and retains the stock look except for rear seat delete and rollcage.

If you are looking to drive this beast around town in the Summer heat or bitter cold you might want to think twice as this car does not have air conditioning or a heater. It also lacks power brakes and power steering for you non-manly types. The owner claims to have invested $100K and run a best of 11.04 @ 128.64 mph, very impressive.

For more info and a breakdown of all the parts check out the Ebay Auction on this Mustang.

SVT Is Alive and Kicking!

April 18th, 2006 by CobraMatt

According to Edmunds Inside Line Ford’s Special Vehicle Team Lives on. Ford’s downsized plan for its endangered SVT will now offer one performance Mustang and one performance truck according to Mark Fields, Ford executive vice president and president of the Americas. Previously, the Dearborn automaker had said SVT would have as many as five products.

Fields said the automaker expects “to sell 5,000-10,000 of each SVT vehicle a year going forward.” The Shelby GT500, the latest Mustang developed by SVT, goes on sale this summer. Fields would not say what kind of performance truck is in the works for SVT or when it would hit showrooms. The Ford Sport Trac Adrenalin, which was slated for 2007, was canceled as part of the automaker’s Way Forward program.

Mark Martin Takes A Roush For A Spin

April 18th, 2006 by CobraMatt

NASCAR driver Mark Martin takes a 2006 Roush Stage 2 Ford Mustang for a drive down pit road after taking media members for a few laps around the newly paved track at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina.

Martin ran six laps in the Roush Mustang, hitting about 90 mph as he carefully examined the surface for any imperfections. His assessment and stamp of approval is what Lowe’s officials had been hoping for. They spent $3 million this winter to repave the surface to better track conditions.

Shelby Ramps Up Production of GT-H

April 18th, 2006 by CobraMatt

Does April 17 ring a bell with anybody in the Mustang community? Bueller….Bueller…Bueller. Well it should because yesterday marked the 42nd birthday of the introduction of the Ford Mustang (April 17, 1964). I am not sure if this was planned but Carroll Shelby International, Inc’s wholly owned subsidiary Shelby Automobiles, Inc. announced yesterday the start of production of the new Shelby GT-H at it’s Las Vegas production facility.

The Shelby GT-H was recently unveiled to press on April 12th at the media days at the New York International Auto Show and received rave reviews from the crowd with anticipation building for their introduction to the rental market later this year.

In a previous entry we tell all about the 2006 Shelby GT-H.
