Car and Driver Compares Vette vs. GT500

June 6th, 2006 by CobraMatt

If you have not already picked up the latest Car and Driver you should pick one up and read all about the Shelby GT500 vs. Vette cover article. In the July 2006 issue Car and Driver does a comparison test review on a 2006 Chevrolet Corvette vs. the 2007 Shelby GT500 Mustang. The article is well written and backed with solid test results but it just seemed bias toward the Corvette in so many ways.

In the article they do comparisons on performance, wieght distribution, skidpad and braking. In most cases the Shelby was behind the Corvette for obvious reasons one being the wieght of the car at 3,896 lbs which is 616 pounds heavier then the vette. One performance test done by Car and Driver that will probably be tested over and over on the streets illegally of course is the accelleration from 50 to 70 mph with the GT500 .3 tenths faster then the Vette.

Although the GT500 came up short in several tests one cannot complain about getting a 500 horsepower automobile for less then $50K. It sure beats paying $60K, $70K or $80K for the likes of a Vette, Viper or M3.

    My local dealer,
Beach Ford in Myrtle Beach, SC, called me yesterday and said I could place my order now for my new 2007 GT-500 Shelby Mustang. It would only require a $40,000 deposit plus sticker MSRP.
So much for your owning a Shelby Mustang.
Does this sound like someone who wants to do business with the locals for their repeat business.
I waited over 40 years to own one of these for myself and to have it blown away because of pure greed.
Most dealers at least told me up front that they were going to put theirs on Ebay, but this dealer lead me to believe I had chance for the best of the best.

It’s pretty shitty what some dealers are doing to folks who have been on the waiting list. My best advice is wait 4 to 6 months and you will be able to get one at the right price.

I would buy “THE AMERICAN DREAM” before I pay 65,000 to 70,000 for a 2007 Shelby Cobra, that’s what I told my dealer when I cancelled my order that I put in back in October of 2005. FORD & DEALERS, you are pretty SHADY CHARACTERS- 20,000 DEALER MARK-UP.

Hope…yes, there’s always hope. The production numbers, as stated on this website, are going to be somewhere between 7,500 and 9,000. That number is more than the number of cobras they made in 2004 and a bit less than they made in 2003(www.mustangheaven.com). People will sell used GT500s in the next couple of years at a drastically reduced price. No, I won’t get a brand spankin’ new GT500, but I’ll be just as proud of my used one that I bought without a dealer mark-up. In late 2006, 2007 and 2008, the market will be flooded with used GT500s. Right place, right time. Dealers be damned. May the force be with you.

RedRyder I agree 100%, wait a year or so and you should be able to get one in the $30’s.
