Teens Prefer Mustang, Parents like Civic

September 6th, 2006 by CobraMatt

In a recent study done by Kelley Blue Book and KBB.com, a Mustang is the top choice for drivers ages 16 to 25 but 34 percent of them would drive a Honda Civic if that’s what the parents were offering to buy them as their first car. The Honda Civic is a top choice among 43 percent of the parents polled who said they would rather have their kids drive a Civic than any other car including a Mustang or SUV. I would probably be one of those 43 percent of parents who would buy their kids an import because it was safer and cheaper but on the other hand I would like my son or daughter the option to choose their own car within reason because I know that a car says alot about who you are and what you are about.

Do you think that your first car shaped your life or is it just another ride to get you from point A to point B? That is the question I ask myself from time to time, where would I be if I bought the car my parents wanted me to buy? The answer to that question is, I probably would not be here writing this because my parents had a totally different car in mind for me instead of the Mustang I got.

I can relate to the Kelley Blue Book poll even though my situation happend 13 years ago. I can remember back when I got my first car, yes it was a Mustang of course but it almost was not and my life could have been very different if my parents had their way. Back in 1993 when I was a we ole lad my neighbor had an early 90’s two-door quad-four grand am with low miles for sale and my parents were hell bent on buying it for me. I have to admit it did not look that bad but yes it was a PONTIAC of sorts. So after a few arguments and some screaming, I told my parents I would drive it off a cliff before I would drive it to school. Yes, I was a spoiled bratt at the ripe old age of 17 but I finally convinced them that a 1990 Mustang GT I was looking at would last alot longer than some POS Pontiac Grand-AM. With that in mind I had already picked out my Mustang (1990 GT) which was sitting on the local used car lot. Not sure I had to do much convincing after my Father and I took it for a test drive and he told me it rode better than his S-10 truck at the time. So to make a long story short, I got the Mustang and here I am today 5 Mustangs later with a bunch of Mustang websites. I guess you could say my first car led me to where I am today changed my life for the better.

Boy does this article bring back memories; my very first car actually WAS a gray 1990 Pontiac Grand AM SE 2-door with the 5-speed and quad-4 motor. I loved mustangs back then but couldn’t afford one so this thing, reliable as it was for the 1 month that I owned it, met its demise at the irons of a set of railroad tracks and a bent oilpan. The engine locked up and that was it. Now I’m the proud owner of an ‘87 GT hatch, a 95 Cobra #182, a 96 Mystic Cobra #1666 and a 95 v-6 Mustang.
