The Shelby GT500 Officialy Rated at 500 HP
May 2nd, 2006 by CobraMatt

Well you knew it was coming and now it’s official, Ford has upped the rating on the Shelby GT500 to 500 base horsepower from the previous number of 475. The 500 hp rating was obtained using the Society of Automotive Engineer’s latest standard and was witnessed by an objective third party.
The Shelby GT500 goes into production in late June and should be available at dealerships sometime in July. If you were one of the lucky ones to get your name on a dealers list and plunk down your deposit you should get your car sometime this Summer.
Ford Press Release:
The most powerful factory-built Mustang ever just got even more potent. Final certification testing of the Shelby GT500’s 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 shows it will produce 500 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque – 25 more horsepower than preliminary estimates.
“With 500 hp and the Shelby name, this car is an instant legend,” said Hau Thai-Tang, director, Advanced Product Creation & SVT programs. “This is the most powerful, most capable Mustang ever.”
The Ford Shelby GT500’s supercharged 5.4-liter, 32-valve V-8 is a result of Ford’s experience in developing the modular V-8 and V-10 engine series. The engine is force-fed air via a “Roots-type” supercharger providing 9 pounds per square inch of boost. It borrows the four-valve cylinder heads, piston rings and bearings, from the Ford GT engine.
The Shelby GT500’s 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 will be built at Ford’s Romeo Engine Plant in Romeo, Mich. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
The right to purchase the first 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 was auctioned for $600,000, with the proceeds benefiting the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation. The 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 goes on sale this summer.

The GT 500 is supposed to start production in June, But there is a new blue GT 500 coupe driving around Redding, CA with ‘Corning Ford’ dealer stickers. What gives?

There are a bunch of test mule GT500’s running around various parts of the country but I highly doubt any GT500’s are being driven around by dealers. Production has not started yet so nobody should have one.

Well Ford is finally on the right page! Now let’s get them out to the dealers. I’m a Fleet Manager at a Ford Dealership and we have nothing but broshures, posters, and about everything else you can imagine on the vehicle and …….? No Shelby’s! Let’s get them to the people and take the bragging rights away from the Z06 fans. This vehicle can have 600hp, but if we can’t deliver them, then who cares how many write up’s MT, and C&D have. Let’s get it together Ford and start selling these cars!

I signed a contract for 10K over msrp with a 1k down payment back in december 2005. I was told around 40k. what do you think ???????????????????????????????????. I really like the idea about it going to 500hp(bad ass)

How do you get $100K?, MSRP is going to be around $40K for base model. Most dealers are marking up the car $5K-$10K and that will soon wear off after the first of the year.
May 5th, 2006 at 12:39 am
cobra14fun Says
I have heard of dealers asking 100K for their 1st. car they get. In Va. Beach, Va., my dealer is charging 20K over sticker for their total allocation of about 5 cars! I was told the sticker price is expected to be between 45 and 55K. I have my deposit down and have rights to the first one in this area. It will be a White car, stripe delete ( this is a damn option!) black on black interior with the works- 1000 shaker stereo, premium interior, stripe delete, etc. Should be a sleeper being pure white! Can’t wait to get it in especial now it has 500hp! Ford is sending certain premium SVT dealers a car outside their allotment and they pic the options, the dealer has no control over it but their regular allotment they can. Cars ordered this way are being shown on dealer’s paperwork as ” preproduction orders” whatever this means! I know regular production starts - this is no joke; 6/06/06. I couldn’t make it up if I tried! I bet though these cars will run like the devil though!!!!!

I wish Ford will release the performance stats on this car like top end, 1/4 mile times etc. Despite the weight difference over the 03 cobras, maybe high 11’s low 12’s?? I guess we have to sweat it out until Ford decides to talk a little more about the car, probably closer to the actual production date.

Any bid is a good bid but I heard that it will run around 48k. How can Ford refuse building enough SVT models for the high performance lovers? This is lucrative business. I asked 2 brokers at the same dealer, one says 100k and the other 70k. So there is a lot of B… going on.

The 2007 GT500 is a big car, a freaking tank, that will require every bit of that 500 HP to move it, weighing in at 500 lbs over a stock Mustang GT at 3900-4000 lbs. Can you imagine trying to stop this monster, let alone cornering in it? There are full-size trucks that weigh less than 2 tons.
I’m going to laugh when the real performance specs come out on this car and people realize it’s a tank. I’ll bet any 2003 or 2004 Cobra will smoke it.
May 16th, 2006 at 7:45 pm
JOE Says
TO CObrafan: Yes it’s a bigger car. But it has more motor, more brakes, more of everything. It’s a collector car. I tried to sit in an 04 Cobra and at 6 feet 4 inches tall, I had NO legroom. This one has more. You stick with your 03 or 04. Give me the retro look anytime. Reminds me of my old 70 Mach 1. People laughed at it also. For 10-20k, A GUY COULD GET THE FORD GT ALUMINUM BLOCK AND LOSE 100 LBS. TALKING ABOUT FULL SIZED TRUCKS- MY F-350 4×4 WEIGHTS 5500 LBS. LIKE THE WEIGHT. 2 WHEEL DRIVE TRUCKS MIGHT WEIGHT LESS BUT THEY DON’T GO WELL IN THE SNOW. I HAVE WAITED SINCE THE 93 FOX MUSTANGS FOR THIS CAR AND IT’S HERE!!!!!! ENJOY YOURS AND GOOD LUCK!

DON’T HATE COBRAFAN! YES THE GT500 WEIGHS 402 MORE THEN THE 03 COBRA (NO SUCH THING AS AN 04 COBRA), BUT ADD 110 MORE HORSES, BIGGER BRAKES, BIGGER STABILIZER BARS, 1LB MORE PRESSURE PSI SUPERCHARGER AND FASTER GEARS!
WHAT DOES ALL OF THIS MEAN YOU MIGHT ASK. THE GT500 WILL OUTDO THE 03!

JOE, HAVE YOU HAD ANY EXPIRENCE IN HEARING THE SOUND OF ANY OFF ROAD X PIPE ON A MUSTANG? LIKE I HAD POSTED BEFORE, I PUT A BASSANI X PIPE ON MY 01 COBRA WITH FLOW MASTERS AND IT SOUNDED AWFUL! I TRADED THE X FOR A H PIPE AND IT SOUNDED GOOD.
I PREFER AN OFF ROAD X PIPE BECAUSE IT SUPPOSEVELY CREATES BETTER AIR FLOW AND MORE HORSE POWER. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
May 18th, 2006 at 8:43 am
JOE Says
JASON, I HAD AN OF ROAD-ROAD H PIPE ON ONE MY OLDER FOX MUSTANGS AND IT SOUNDED GREAT WITH FLOWMASTERS. HAVE NO EXPERIENCE WITH X PIPE OFF-ROAD PIPES BUT THE MAGAZINES SAY THEY MAKE GOOD POWER. I READ THE MAGAZINES AND WILL PROCEED ACCORDINGLY. GOING TO LEAVE MY 07 STOCK FOR A WHILE. MAYBE UNDERDRIVE PULLEYS AND AN UP TO DATE COLD AIR SYSTEM. I WILL WAIT AND SEE WHAT COMES ON THE MARKET. 500 HP IS A GOOD STARTER POINT DON’T YOU THINK? BET THEY COME OUT WITH KILLER UPGRADES FOR THE SUPERCHARGER. DO LOVE THE SOUND OF FLOWMASTERS. ENJOY THE EXCITEMENT OF THIS NEW CAR!!

JASON, MOST MUFFLER SHOPS WILL NOT GUT A CATLYTIC CONVERTER AS THEY WOULD GET IN BIG TROUBLE. I HAD A STRAIGHT H PIPE ON MY OLDER FOX STANG WITH NO CONVERTERS. AS A WV RESIDENT, THEY RARELY INSPECT THAT SORT OF THING AS LONG AS IT IS RUNNING AND IN GOOD SHAPE. THE EXHAUST “SNIFFER” HAS NOT MADE IT TO MY PART OF THE UNIVERSE. I WILL CALL YA AND SEND PICTURES WHEN IT COMES IN. MY SON WILL HELP ME START A WEBSITE FOR IT.
MY FORD DEALER IS GOOD TO ME AS I HAVE BOUGHT 2 VEHICLES FROM HIM SO I DON’T HAVE TO “BID” ON A NEW SHELBY. GOOD LUCK AND HOPE YOU CAN GET ONE ALSO IN THE FUTURE.

Although the car has 500 horsepower its not much faster in the quarter mile then the 03-04 Cobra. I belive Car and Driver timed it at 12.7 and the 03-04 Cobra did the quarter mile in 12.9. So 2 tenths of second is nothing and can be made up with a good driver or a few mods.

They are calling 9K or so units Limited. It may not seem like alot but there should be plenty for all who can afford the $43K price tag as the year goes on.
Another thing on the quarter mile time. I read the Car and Driver article and it said they got a result of 12.7. Then I get my MuscleMustangsFastFords Mag and they did their own test with several passes and they came up with a best of 12.25 at 117mph.

I used to own a 1967 Mustang 289cu inch 3 speed shift electric convertible roof, standard. I was almost 20 yrs old. I used to drive it out only on Sundays 1970-1974. At the time my girlfriend thought the car was too much of an eye catcher. Probably she felt threatened. She had demanded I make a choice either retain her & sel the Mustang or the other way round. I guess I was too young those days. In fact I still have the wife whom I drive in a BMW but I’ve never ever forgotten the Stang. I follow it in magazines or on the net. Now I’ve just learned of the new Mustang GT 500 Cobra Jet which reminds me that once I drove my younger brother’s

the commercial for this car has told us that it is faster than the carrera gt which is obviously not true because this car is noteven comparable to that car. the fact that this car is only running 4.5 seconds on zero to sixty is slow for how much horse power it has. it is just to heavy to really produce any good numbers stock on 0-60 or on the quarter mile, which is the problem with most american cars they weigh to much. there are many cars i can think of that have 500 horsepower that could out run this car with no problem such as the porsche 911 turbo with 412 horse power pushing 4.2 on the zero to sixty times. the noble m12 has 352 horse power and is running times as low as 3.7 seconds one the zero to sixty. the noble m15 is 3.5 with 400 horsepower also, as you can see the foeirgn cars outdo american cars quite easily and are alot more reliable with better handling and dontweigh ridiculous amounts of weight.

I think there are 4064 cars being made, but I’m lucky theres one in the garage. In the terms of the 60’s it flat out bitchen.
The last time I was going to buy a used Shelby it was $3,600, one year old. Now what is that old jollopy selling for 200k-375k ++ darn I had 2 kids, and the back seat would only hold 4 bags of grocerys. Well kept the kids, now grand kids. I think now in hidsight should have got the Shelby, gas was cheep. But there again divorce was expensive. dyslic COBRA owner with a dull crayon
Reliable , I have been in Fords 2 cabs with over 950k miles and no engine work. I sell my Fords, after 400,000 cause Im tired of them. I have asked a few owners of cabs , they just say Ford,Merk,Lincolns last longer.
funny thing they have a 5 ,5 star safety rating.
Now racing cabs are NOT common , but there always running.

The only way that you could beat a Z06 is if the driver of the Z06 did not realize you were racing. Your chances of buying a GT500 at MSRP right now are non-existent. Markups are slowly coming down but I don’t expect to see dealers selling for MSRP till begining of Summer next year if even at all. I am in the same boat as you, wanting a GT500 but not willing to pay any Markup. There are probably thousands of people just like us out there willing to pay MSRP but will it ever happen soon, probably not.

Sorry, a base Corvette is just as quick to 60, faster to the 1/4, and has a top speed of 20 or more mph, which it will get to in a much faster time. As well, any corvette back to the C3’s will outhandle the GT500. And thats from a N/A engine, none of this supercharged crap.

Is there a difference in the longer term value or something special in puchasing a 2007 or is it worth waiting to buy a 2008.

sitting at stoplight today in wilmington,n.c.new gt 500 convert. pulls up.they are strong, but not that strong.i took it from a dig in an 06′ srt 8 magnum no mods and had it by two cars at 80 mph.that car is slow to corvette standards, because i have smoked 06′ c6’s and the c6 stayed at my back bumper.dont waste your money.cause the hemi’s in it to win it!!!!

Believe it or not, my wife is pushing me to buy the GT500 as soon as possible! Every day she asks me if I have ordered it! I’m 62 so I called for insurence and was told it would only be $526 per year, and in the winter when I store it, it will be much cheaper yet…

Ok, I’m a vette fan through and through, know everything about them but I have no problem with Stangs, until you guys start talking bs about beating Z06’s, haha. Sure, the Gt500 will be fast, but basiaclly just as fast as the stock C6, give or take .1. The z06 will smoke it, end of story. This will be a nice car, bu the z06 is in a different league, going about .8 or .9 faster 0-60 let alone a 11.4 1/4 Mile
