My 1992 5.0 Convertible Mustang Needs A New Top
December 27th, 2007 by CobraMatt

Well as you can probably tell by the photo and title of this entry my recently purchased 1992 Mustang Convertible has started to leak. I think the big giveaway is the Halloween candy bowl acting as a drip bucket in my front passenger seat but thats the only thing I could find in a driving rainstorm on short notice the other night. Yes I could have pulled the car into the garage but taking out the Cobra after I just washed it was not an option so she sat in the driveway leaking into the candy bowl.
Now when I purchased the car it did not leak but I knew the top had to be replaced as it’s pretty worn along with it being the original top. So from what I have been reading on different forums convertible top installation is best done by the pros and not by the weekend warrior with basic handtools.
This all happend before the holidays so getting it somewhere to be replaced was pretty much out of the question and then stomaching the cost is another issue. I did make a call to one well respected shop in my area and I was given a quote in the range of $800-$1K for replacing the top and back window depending on what extra parts that were needed. Never having to replace a convertible top I am unsure what a fair price is so I guess I am looking for some answers, if anybody has had their top replaced or knows what the typical price is post them up in the comments and let me know. Thanks in advance.

I’ve replaced the top on my old foxbody twice and recall paying about 800-900 at the most. After I sold it, I moved to a BMW convertible for a while and really missed the glass window of my mustang, so I wouldn’t recommend that you skimp on the back window even to save a few bucks.
The new top will make it much easier to lock down though, so you’ll love having it.

800 is a good price, it will cost a lot more if you have a glass back window compared to a plastic. save the hydralics and all the parts though those are valuable, or find a donor top

Thanks for the prices, It sounds like the price they gave me is real close to what the market price is.

Price sounds good. In my area, Sacramento Calif, I got a quote of 1400.00 for a top with the glass window.

Nice car, I just bought it’s twin, with 65k mi.
completely unmodified,
except for tires, batt,+new roof.
He payed 1000 for the roof w/glass
I think this color is awesome,
+ the combo of white vert roof makes it one of if not the prettiest 5.0,s built.

just a tip,
In 92 the Limited edition cars came with a headliner
inside the vert top,(which greatly reduced wind/rain noise + also the rattle/sqeaks from the tops frame work) + then in 93 all verts came with the headliner.
Definetly worth the extra cost.
I would like to talk to you about your car.
If you could, please e-mail me at cleganite@webtv.net
thanks

I just had a top put on my 89 lx. The top with rear glass window was 299.00, I also replaced the pads, 49.95. I paid a top installer 350.00 to install, he did a great job and my car loooks great

I too have an identical car here in the UK. It does have a broken ashtray lid but everything else is great. 72000 miles, totally stock.
