SEMA 2007: Mike Murillo’s 3000 HP Twin-Turbo Mustang
October 1st, 2007 by CobraMatt

At this year’s SEMA show Mike Murillo in association with Turbosmart will unveil his new Twin-Turbo 1993 Fox-Body Outlaw Mustang that packs an estimated 3000 horsepower. The Mustang is being built to compete in the Outlaw 10.5 class which Mike has won 8 times over his career with his previous car, the “Star” Mustang. His new Mustang is powered by a 541 cubic inch big block Ford motor with the boost being provided by two 88mm turbos, controlled by two 50mm PowerGates, two RacePort BOVs and an e-Boost2 boost management system. Mike is hoping to run mid 6 second times with this setup.

Is there any disadvantage in mounting the turbos that far from the heads?

Yeah, it will take 5 minutes to spool them up sitting at redline. And then your battery will melt. It goes against the laws of thermal-dynamics to have them that far away, you lose the benefit from the hot gasses too. I’d be embarassed to show that at sema..
Anyways, Good luck with that!

And exactly how many 3,000 hp cars have you built? Ah, you must’ve won multiple championships then?

there are a few kits out there for rear mounted turbos.
If the thing makes 3000HP I wouldn’t argue. I read the main reason was there was no room with the big block. Plus the weight in the rear helps it from being so nose heavy.

With the turbos at the rear you will loose some thermal energy, which you compensate for by turning up the boost pressure. This set-up also increases turbo lag, but that’s not an issue with a drag car where you open the throttle and leave it there. For this application there really isn’t a disadvantage.

with the turbo’s mounted in the rear some turbo lag is possible. SO WHAT its lot like a 10.5 outlaw tire will hook with 3000 hp off the starting line

Wow…5 Minute spool time and my battery will melt. Thank goodness neither has happened. We are very pleased to say that the combo is working quite nice so far. We have tightened converter 3 times already and still have no problem spooling car. We have experienced no diminished boost or spool time to date. We have run a 7.18 @ 195 so far on a track that no other Outlaw 10.5 cars have made it down during off season. Stay Tuned cause its only getting better. Thanks to all that have supported us in this new adventure!!!!

I have been following Mike’s career back when I did not have a Mustang. If he builds like that, it’s for a reason and when he starts dominating I wonder how many more start putting their turbo’s in the back. As soon as I get out of Iraq my car will be going to Murillo’s shop. It will not have 3000hp but will be built. Good luck Mike!
