It’s official boys and girls the 2010 Ford Mustang will make its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19th. Expect the redesigned 2010 Mustang to include new front and rear fascias with all new headlamps, tailights and grille. A new redesigned hood and interior are also expected with a few new wheel choices possible. Under the hood look for the same variant of the 4.6L V8 with a few tweaks to increase horsepower and efficiency.

Recently Ford gave us a sneak peak of the 2010 Mustang at the Kohler International Challenge vintage car race at Road America leading the field as the pace car. Not much could be seen on the car since it was hidden under camoflage but I am sure there was a bit of excitement in the air.

I am more than a little concerned about the where the Mustang currently sits in the marketplace and where it is going, or not going in this case.

The new 2010 Camaro is about to hit the streets and when you look at the specs, the base V6 is putting out as much horse power as the current GT and the SS version is putting down 420…..120 HP over the GT. I also read that the new 2010 Mustang GT to be unveiled in November will still have the 4.6-liter V8 as the current GT with a few “minor” tweaks to provide just a few more ponies.

Sadly, it would appear we are picking up in 2010 right where we left off in 2002 with the V8 Camaro putting out considerably more HP than the Mustang GT. Yes, I know that the Mustang outsold the Camaro and Firebird combined but that was of little comfort when the stoplight turned green.

As soon as the new Camaro SS hits the streets it’s going to be showing its taillights to Mustang GT owners and in a big way. Add to that the new Dodge Challenger R/T and SRT-8 and the Mustang will be at the back of the pack of current American muscle cars.

Ford has a new 5.0-liter engine ready to go that could at least give the Mustang owner a fighting chance and keep us from being spanked by a V6 Camaro of all things!! For the life of me, I just don’t understand why Ford would not put an engine in the new 2010 Mustang GT to compete with the new guys on the block. Am I missing something here?

While I totally agree with your observation on the current state of the Mustang vs Camaro/Challenger, the sad truth is that it all comes down to making a profit. One huge reason the Mustang outsells, and will continue to outsell the Camaro and Challenger, will be insurance.

Many potential Camaro owners will be flocking over to Ford when they go and compare insurance rates. You can bet your retirement fund that insurance for a 6.1 liter, 420 hp 2 door coupe will be 2 to 3 times more than a 4.6 liter 300 hp offering from Ford. Of course, as you pointed out, that potential buyer could buy a 300 hp V-6, but I bet that most, if not all, potential buyers of the SS Camaro will not opt for a V-6. They will want that manly sound of a V-8 and look very hard at the Mustang.

The Challenger poses a more serious risk since Dodge will be offering a smaller displacement V-8 (370 hp) in their R/T version. So, once again, for those that cannot afford insurance on a Challenger SRT8, that customer can opt for the R/T version.

Anyway, that is my take on all this. If I had a wish that Ford would honor, it would be to give me, the GT customer, the option to order a 5.8 Liter V-8 without having to buy a Shelby GT500. Heck, you can even keep the blower as an exclusive item for the GT500…just give me the cubes.

My hope is that the GT is at least somewhat competitive with the Camaro and Challenger as far Performance goes. Hopefully they don’t overprice it either, Which I have a feeling GM will do with the Camaro, I already think the SRT Challenger is priced too high for the performance… I wouldn’t buy one in a million years.

I am a 02 Mustang GT owner, I like the mustangs in general but feel Ford is taking the wrong route. They made the same mistake when they tried to compete with Chevy in the half ass manor that they did for the last four decades. Mustangs now and days are too overpriced for what they offer, same with Mopar products. Chevy is going to make a stand that will make the other American dealers either put up or shut up. One thing that might really hurt the Camaro is the 4000lb curb weight which still might leave it in the crosshairs for a beefer 4.6l or new 5.0.

I think what some folks miss about the new Mustang is the orginal Mustang…meaning that the Mustang created the pony car segment…the right car at the right time. It will matter little in the long run about horsepower or about who’s out front on the track. The Mustang is an American icon…something that the Camaro or the Challanger will never achieve on the same level. Americans embraced the Mustang in 1964 and made it a run-away hit and even when it went Pinto based it still outsold the Camaro. My parents bought a Mustang in 1965 and we still have it today….it’s a part of the family and is loved for the memories it brings back and for being an affordable little family car that still was the “it” car of the day. Mustang is still the “it” car and will outrun the Camaro off the sales floor if nowhere else. A brash little pony that nuzzled it’s way into America’s heart and it’s there to stay. Camaro and Challanger…they are just cars headed for the junkyard….Mustangs are family members and you just can’t buy that.
