Finally Bought A Mustang, a 2007 Shelby GT

As some of you know I sold my 2003 Cobra a month or so ago and have been looking for my next Mustang while I was driving my 1992 5.0 LX convertible which I am sad to say has also been sold.  The ‘92 was a great Mustang but after owning it for several months it was just not what I had hoped it would be so I put it her on craigslist and away she went to someone locally for about the same price I bought it for.

After the ‘92 Mustang sold I really needed another Mustang pretty quick so my search intensified because walking 5 miles to work everyday was not an option, yes folks only 5 miles, no traffic for me.  I would have asked my wife to wake up at 7:30am everyday and drive me to work but something tells me that was not going to happen either.

As I mentioned before I was looking for a 2007 Mustang GT, California Special or even a Shelby GT if the price was right.  So one day searching dealer inventories online here in the DFW metroplex I came upon one dealer who had a 2007 Mustang GT on the lot still according their site.  It just happend to be a Sunday and the stealership was closed for the day so I drove up in the wifes SUV and looked around the lot and the only 2007 Mustang on the lot was a white Shelby GT (manual) that was tucked away in the back and no 2007 Mustang GT anywhere.  As I was leaving I did not think to much about it and actually was thinking the Mustang GT might be somewhere else on the lot in the back.  When I got home I sent an email to the stealership before I headed to bed asking about the 2007 Mustang GT.  My response to the email came back the next day and a salesmen at the stealeship said the only 2007 they had on the lot was the 2007 Shelby GT and they really wanted to move it.

To make a long story short I went up to the stealership and drove the Shelby GT and a Mustang GT because they were asking nearly the same price for both less the rebates/discounts and the fact they were trying to get rid of the Shelby GT.  When driving the Shelby GT I definately noticed the stiffer ride where as the Mustang GT was alot smoother but not as much difference as I would have thought.  The biggest difference in both is all the add-ons the Shelby GT which has suspension, exhaust, air-intake, hurst shifter, and badging.  My favorite was the Shelby GT by far and it was pretty much a done deal in my head.

So after I drove both and looked them over the business grad in me asked the question which one is going to hold its value better in the long run.  The overwhelming answer was the Shelby GT because of the Shelby name and limited run, so the decision was made to buy the Shelby GT.  I got an awesome deal on the car that I could not pass up, I drove it home for $30K and change.

I have had the car for about a week or so and finally got some decent photos of the car.  Please don’t laugh at my picture taking skills, the sun was out in full effect which made for a few bad pics.  I will take better ones at a later date.

Congrats on the very slick car. I have a black 07 Shelby GT and I love it. I have never had a car that has turned more heads. Say what you will about them, they are a lot of fun and are true Shelbys. They may not be the fastest cars on the road but they hold their own and can out handle most. Have fun enjoying your Shelby.

i just got a new mustang 2 months ago.
it was a pick between a shelby GT just like yours or a 04 mystic cobra. i ended up with the cobra just bcuz its a neckbreaker and stole it for 24k. but if i couldve got a shelby GT for the price you did it wouldve been a hard decision. you gotta love that hurst shifter tho!

When the sales manager told me $30K and some change suddenly the Mustang GT I was looking at was no longer an option. Its definately a great car that I will enjoy for years to come.

    thanks

How many miles were on the Shelby GT when you bought it? Was it purchased as-new with full warranty?

  7. 7

    CobraMatt Says

It had 295 miles and was sold to me as-new with full warranty from the date I bought it. I am sure it was driven a bunch for test drives but you could not tell because the interior looked immaculate. Plus the outside had no scratches or dings whatsoever. I looked over it about 5 times before I committed to buying it.

    Congrats,

Last year I picked up a 2007 Black GT and love it. There is so much out there for our cars that you can personalize it to be whatever you want.

I just bought a 2007 Black Shelby. Dealer told me the same thing as you were told. We want to get rid of this car. They gave me over 6500 in rebates, a free detail job on the entire car and wheels and then after a little argument I was given the retired Ford worker Z plan discount on the GT invoice before the car was shipped to Shelby!!
Drove to Chicago this weekend and got a solid 30.6 MPG. Getting 22 MPG in town if I keep my foot out of that great ride. My wife says it’s the safest most comfortable hot rod we have ever driven. Pricing a whipple blower for a 450 RWHP upgrade.
Hope you are enjoying your Shelby as much as we are.
    Safe travels

    Chuck and Easy Ed,

I am definately having a good time with the car, I have just over 600 miles on it. As for the wishlist of parts, a supercharger is right up there and would cure my craving for the GT500 power. A wing is also a definate possibility. The one Chuck linked to looks pretty good. Anytime I buy something for the car expect to read about it here.

Do you really think a plastic stripe on the side that says SHELBY GT will made you worth a lot more money a few years down the road?

    MD Says

How ironic…I saw your fox online for sale. I almost contacted you, but found something else with a manual. Congrats!

    CobraMatt Says

    Mauri,

Never said the car would be worth more money down the road. Part of my decision for buying it instead of the regular Mustang GT was which one would hold its value better. Obviously the Shelby GT will because they made less of them than regular Mustang GT’s and the fact Shelby’s name is attached to won’t hurt.

    Bob Says

To Mauri Reeder - the answer to you question is “Yes”. That stripe will make a big difference someday. That’s just the way it is. Rarity and specialty is what brings in the bigger values in the future.

Congrats on the new Shelby, it’s a sweet looking ride!

While I’m at it, thanks for putting in the time on this blog. I say that because you pointed me in the right direction in my search for an ‘07 GT 500. The dealerships in this area were actually using sharpie markers to add $16K to the sticker and I was about to give up and buy a Saleen (not a bad choice, tho’). I hadn’t even thought of Ebay for a *new* car until I found this blog.

Long story short, I found one that a collector had to get rid of; still in the factory wrappings with 6 factory miles at $2,500.00 over sticker.

Bob, its just a basic GT engine with a few add-ons, xpipe, catback, air intake, shelby suspension (lowered), computer tune, 3.55 gears. It has 335 horsepower, I can attest it definately feels alot quicker than a regular GT having drove both before I bought the Shelby GT.

Snake Bit, Happy to hear I helped you out with your GT500.

If you really want to help me out with the GT500, there is this issue with moving violations………. J/K man, thanks. I’m taking this lil’ baby doll to her second car show in the morning, wish us luck.

I’ve seen the ‘07 Shelby GT upclose at my local dealer. I’ll be honest with you, it didn’t impress me all that much. First off, the Shelby hood scoop looks real tacky. In fact, Ford’s own hood scoop on their GT appearance package looks 200% better. And then, there’s the front grille, which is nothing more than an overlay clamped over the stock honeycomb grille. Compared to the ‘08 Shelby GT500’s complete grille (also at my dealer’s showroom), the ’07’s setup looked real cheapy. Your car may indeed hold its value better than a regular GT, not because of its looks or performance, but only because of the Shelby nameplate.
