1989 Mustang GT Approaches 700,000 Miles on Original Engine

March 26th, 2008 by CobraMatt

700k_miles.jpg

A woman in North Carolina has piled up close to 700K miles on her 1989 Mustang GT with the original engine still entact.  The secret to keeping the engine running smooth according to her son is regular oil changes and proper maintnence.  When executives at Ford got word of the Mustang approaching 700K miles on the original engine they rewarded her with two tickets to this weekends NASCAR race at Bristol Speedway.

Click here to watch the news report, it gave me a good laugh.

My favorite quote from the video news report:

My 1992 5.0 Convertible Mustang Needs A New Top

December 27th, 2007 by CobraMatt

convertible_1_blog.jpg

Well as you can probably tell by the photo and title of this entry my recently purchased 1992 Mustang Convertible has started to leak.  I think the big giveaway is the Halloween candy bowl acting as a drip bucket in my front passenger seat but thats the only thing I could find in a driving rainstorm on short notice the other night.  Yes I could have pulled the car into the garage but taking out the Cobra after I just washed it was not an option so she sat in the driveway leaking into the candy bowl.

Now when I purchased the car it did not leak but I knew the top had to be replaced as it’s pretty worn along with it being the original top. So from what I have been reading on different forums convertible top installation is best done by the pros and not by the weekend warrior with basic handtools.

This all happend before the holidays so getting it somewhere to be replaced was pretty much out of the question and then stomaching the cost is another issue.  I did make a call to one well respected shop in my area and I was given a quote in the range of $800-$1K for replacing the top and back window depending on what extra parts that were needed.  Never having to replace a convertible top I am unsure what a fair price is so I guess I am looking for some answers, if anybody has had their top replaced or knows what the typical price is post them up in the comments and let me know.  Thanks in advance.

New 1992 Fox-Body Convertible In The Family

November 17th, 2007 by CobraMatt

1992_mustang_1.jpg

I have been wanting to buy a fox-body Mustang for some time to tinker around with and after quite a long search with the wifes approval, yes gotta have that, we bought this 1992 Teal/Calypso Green 5.0 LX Convertible for $5K.  It’s got a white top with white leather interior and as hard as it is to say this, yes I bought an automatic.  The exterior of the car is in excellent condition and still retains its original paint.  On the inside everything is in good working condition with no rips or tears in the door panels.  The white leather is serviceable but does need to be replaced in the future.  Also needing to be replaced is the convertible top vinyl as it has a few tears where it folds up but it does not leak so that can wait for a few months.  All switches work on the inside and even the infamous ashtray door still opens/closes with ease.  The factory radio and equalizer are still intact and working great.  The engine runs strong at 99K and the transmission shifts smooth.  The cars exhaust is stock except for some flowmasters that give it a nice sound.  It’s a great driver me and wife will enjoy on sunny days.

This will be my fourth fox-body Mustang I have owned since my 1990 GT, 1991 Coupe and 1990 GT Conv.  I plan on writing about everything I fix, restore or repair on this blog so keep your eyes peeled for fox-body posts.  Below I will give you a rough outline on what I have in mind for the car.

Needs: New Leather Seat Covers, Convertible Top & Glass, Maybe Carpet

Will Be Adding In Future: Aftermarket Radio & Speakers, Full Exhaust, Replace steering wheel

Wishlist: Cobra Upper/Lower, Supercharger (5 PSI), Heads, 17″ Chrome ponys

I am not trying to go overboard on this car as I would like to keep it in nice original condition.  More photos to follow.

Ebay: 5.0 Convertible Morphed Into SL Mercedes Benz

November 11th, 2007 by CobraMatt

mustang_slbenz.jpg

I guess this is one way of upgrading from a 91 5.0L convertible to a SL Mercedes Benz droptop.  One Mustang owner decided to make his own Benz the hard way by custom making all the exterior body panels in fiberglass.  Even the convertible top has the Benz look.  Some people just amaze me with the things they do. Check out the auction here.

Ebay: 1993 LX Coupe with 2003 Cobra Motor, Interior and Suspension

November 3rd, 2007 by CobraMatt

1993lxcoupe_main.jpg

This auction for a 1993 LX coupe with a 2003 Cobra Motor, Interior and Suspension has to be one of my better Ebay finds as of late.  This is one of those cars you are always sitting around with your buddies saying if I had money I would do this but how.  Well fortunately somebody has already gone through the trials and tribulations of how to get this combination working and working they have to the tune of 445 horsepower and 432 ft-lbs of torque.  Is this the ultimate street sleeper or what?

The car includes an 18K mile 2003 Cobra motor stuffed under the hood with a 2.8 blower pulley added for additional horses, complete Cobra interior minus the steering wheel and airbag, flowmaster and bassani exhaust, Maximum Motor Sports K-member and coil over kit with a complete Cobra IRS suspension out back.

The price at around $25K seems reasonable given all the parts and time that has been put into making this car a reality.  Do you think we could get say a Unique Performance to manufacture these babies and dubb them ‘Fox-Rods’.

For many people like myself who grew up with fox-body Mustangs this is definately a dream car that all of us wish we could have in our garage one day.  Lets just hope there are more of these floating around when I have the extra cash to blow.

I have added more photos after the jump along with a link to the auction. Continue reading ‘Ebay: 1993 LX Coupe with 2003 Cobra Motor, Interior and Suspension’

At this year’s SEMA show Mike Murillo in association with Turbosmart will unveil his new Twin-Turbo 1993 Fox-Body Outlaw Mustang that packs an estimated 3000 horsepower.  The Mustang is being built to compete in the Outlaw 10.5 class which Mike has won 8 times over his career with his previous car, the “Star” Mustang.  His new Mustang is powered by a 541 cubic inch big block Ford motor with the boost being provided by two 88mm turbos, controlled by two 50mm PowerGates, two RacePort BOVs and an e-Boost2 boost management system.  Mike is hoping to run mid 6 second times with this setup.

Ebay: 1993 Cobra #19, First Off The Assembly Line

August 7th, 2007 by CobraMatt

1993_cobra.jpg

The 1993 Cobra is just a thing of beauty for me, being that it was the first Cobra of my generation and one of my favorite Mustangs of all time.  Now as I have said from time to time I am always on Ebay and I occasionally look to see what 1993 Cobras they have on the hope of one day buying one.  Todays browsing netted quite possibly the holy grail of 1993 SVT Cobra Mustangs, car #19 which has been claimed to be the first production Cobra to roll off the assembly line.

The first 1993 Cobra that was put into circulation was car #19 because most if not all of the previous cars before this one were destroyed due to various crash testing.  According to a few books I have including the SVT Recognition guide which is the most informative on this subject says this actual car was the first production 1993 Cobra to roll off the assembly line.  The VIN# is 1FACP42D8PF129858, verifying the car is #19, the first car off the line on December 17, 1992.

The condition of the car is another story as the owner (svokid) has decided to let the car go and from the pictures their is some rust on the floor boards and under the hood.  The seats and dash look horrible, the cars been repainted, engine parts have been replaced along with the transmission.  Basically this car needs to be restored to it’s former glory.

This looks to be an amazing find for some lucky Mustang enthusiast who has the cash.  The one and only bid as of writing this is $8K but I expect it to go much higher as word gets around the Mustang community.  The auction is open for another 3days and 22 hours.  For the Ebay auction click here. I have attached some photos below. Continue reading ‘Ebay: 1993 Cobra #19, First Off The Assembly Line’

The custom creations people come up with amaze me sometimes, this one is no different as somebody has decided to take a 1985 Ranger and mate it with the front clip and 302 engine from an early 80’s Mustang.  It can be yours for the low buy it now price of $1800.  Check out the auction for yourself.
